Technolution: Storage Devices

There are many different ways to store data these days; none being foolproof. We recently stored over 300 of our sikkest photographs yet to a WD Passport 160 GB Drive and have not been able to access them since. Turns out the drive is busted. We took it to Staples and asked a techie there to help us to recover the photographs, and he confirmed that the electronics have been shot. He also said that based on what he saw we are looking at a data recovery job that could cost us upward of $1,000.

Of course, we called WD and they told us they would be more than happy to replace the drive. The problem is that they will not pay to recover our 300 prized photographs; that we know you are all dying to see. So, they put us on to one of their data recovery partners. Dude gave us an estimate of between $750 and $1,600, depending on how damaged the drive is. Uhm! Let’s see here. Should we seriously pay up to $1,600 to get back our 300 fire-hot fashion photographs? We don’t think so. So we asked dude if he thinks the price will be dropping anytime soon. He said maybe in another 5 years. Oh well! No 300 fire-hot fashion photographs for you guys anytime soon. But in five years, we promise to deliver.

But seriously, here’s what we’ve decided to do from now on. We will be buying 1TB external hard drives in twos. And will be storing our data in twos. On any given day, two is always better than one. And one more thing, we will start paying attention to the instruction ‘safely remove hardware’ before we unplug them from the computer from now on. No data recovery company will be hearing from us any time soon. Life!
