Art: The Brian Kirhagis’ Exhibits

Brian Kirhagis is an artist of the times. He comes across very humble and would like to think he is a regular John Doe, who has a great sense of humor and is very in touch with world and current affairs. But he is no regular guy. He is a brilliant self-taught artist who consistently creates works of art that are powerful conversation pieces.

On Saturday November 29, 2008, we attended an art exhibition at Ceres Gallery, New York City, where three exhibits from Brian Kirhagis’ masterpieces were being showcased, alongside works by a few other artistes. We chatted with Brian Kirhagis about his work, and got a good sense of what inspires him, as well as how he came to be such a masterful artist.

In the early years, Brian Kirhagis’ art teacher told him he was not made for art and suggested that he pursued a career in another field. Being the obedient student that he was, Brian Kirhagis quit art and went in a different direction. Years later, he had a calling to return to art, and return he did. He sketched and painted and sketched and painted night and day and day and night, until he got in touch with the power that inspires and enables him to deliver masterpieces. Of course, he did not do it by himself. He got a little help from his ‘mentor’ Salvador DalĂ, the brilliant Spanish Artist, whose life story and artistic technique is a motivating force and inspiration to him. Brian Kirhagis also has the word ‘patience’ tattooed in Arabic on his right hand (he is right-handed). Whenever he is tempted to quit ‘patience’ confronts him.

Brian Kirhagis’ art for the most part communicates life, and vice versa. He loves to party and have a good time, but he also has a healthy social conscience that keeps him connected with the issues and challenges that are ongoing in our world. His love for humanity and his concern about global issues are reflected in his works. Three of Brian Kirhagis’ works were featured at this exhibition. They are: Pray for Hip Hop (left), Generation Y (center), and Tied Up (right). These three works all have a few things in common. They are colorful, intricate, global, and powerful.

We asked Brian Kirhagis how did he know when a particular piece that he is working on is completed. His answer, ‘I get a certain feeling’.

Runway: Concordia College Fashion Show

On November 21, 2008, the African Latin Heritage Club at Concordia College, Bronxville, NY, held a fashion show dubbed ‘Welcome to the Jungle’. The creative works of six up-and-coming designers were showcased on the runway. After the six designers presented, the students gave the audience a little something extra, by showcasing pieces from their closets. The hosts for the evening were Brittany Johnson and Alaina Jackson, Concordia students. It was a beautiful event that was put together by a group of students who are busy getting prepared to step out into the real world. We enjoyed the presentation and would like to encourage the student body at Concordia, and in all learning institutions worldwide, to go hard for success.

Here are the designers in the other they appeared on the runway:

Urban: First Fridays Fashion Show

On Friday November 7, 2008, EventLinks and Carivibez.TV hosted a fashion show and first Fridays at Nest (nightclub), New York City. Two designers presented at the fashion show, Toxic Venon and Softlines BKNY. Unfortunately, we did not get there in time for Toxic Venon’s presentation. However, we have covered at least two recent fashion shows that featured designs from Toxic Venon, see link to one of the photo galleries below.

The designers at Softlines BKNY know creativity. Their presentation was beautiful, and truly demonstrated a special kind of creativity. They showcased pieces that are made for the modern woman, who takes pride in what she wears and has a unique sense of style. We enjoyed every moment of it.

Jeantrix Clothing Company's Trashy Warehouse Fashion Show

The two designers (Deric Crawley and Muhammad Abdul-Basit) at Jeantrix Clothing Company, Philadelphia, PA, bring a rare kind of creativity to fashion. They have the ability to literally create something from nothing, beautifully. On Saturday October 4, 2008, they held a fashion show at a warehouse in Philadelphia, PA, dubbed the Trashy Warehouse Fashion Show. They converted a dusty dirty warehouse into a comfortable suite with a sort of Disturbia (from Rihanna’s music video by the same name) theme to it. Then at show time they gave the audience a special and memorable lesson in creativity. Using clean garbage, and other materials that could be easily found in one’s garbage, they created attractive unique pieces that effectively demonstrated their creativity. We loved every moment of it. Of course, there were other pieces that were not related to the garbage trashy theme.

But the Trashy Warehouse Fashion Show was much more than a plain old fashion show. The designers used the runway to make environmental and social commentaries and to challenge us to rethink everything in order to make our lives and this world a better place. We love what they are doing and we are asking that you show them love and support them.
