Technolution: The One Laptop Per Child Project

On May 20, 2008, at an event at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Professor Nicholas Negroponte unveiled the new version of the XO laptop, which was created for poor children in developing countries. The new version is called the XO2 and is expected to cost $75 (US dollars). This is far less than the current version, which originally had a target price of $100 but is currently sold for $188. The new machines should be ready for shipping in 2010.

Things have not been going according to plan for Professor Nicholas Negroponte, founder of One Laptop Per Child. Professor Negroponte estimated that over 100 million laptops would have been sold by the end of 2008. However, to date a little over 600,000 have been sold. Professor Negroponte is hopeful that the new version (the XO2) will be better received, so that the poor children in developing countries will gain better access to education through technology.

Good luck Professor Negroponte. Keep up the great work you are doing. God bless you.
