Feature: Knitwear Fashion

Knitwear Fashion

Introduction
If you want to impress in the first moment it is difficult to believe that the cords is the right choice. Knitwear is much more than just a warm sweater. The unusual approaches and techniques of the cords become a new dimension. Knitwear can be used as glamour clothing. Everyday, designers come up with new techniques and ways in using knitwear to dazzle and awe with material significance. Dive into softness, radiance, innovation and glamour of knitted fashion.

What is Knitwear?
Knitwear is the third largest group of textiles; the first largest group is cotton and the second largest group of textiles is viscose and artificial materials. When I compared them with other fabrics I found out that they are much more flexible, and are already historically used to make socks and other pieces of clothing that adjust to the body. Generally speaking, elasticity of knitted fabrics gives them beautiful wrinkles, when compared with thicker fabrics. Knitwear is warm and comfortable and is great for clothing that is worn next to the skin, especially underwear. They are often braided wool, which remains hot, even if it is wet. Wool is a very suitable material for knitwear also because of its exceptional flexibility and the formation of wonderful knots. Moreover, flexibility and warmth in the knitted fabrics are opposed. Knitted lace, which has the most holes, are also the most flexible, and the least insulating. There is one bad feature of knitwear, and that is shrinking.

Maintenance Tricks
With proper maintenance, knitwear can last for many years.

1. The first rule is that you do not wash them too often.
2. Wash them only when they are really dirty.
3. Knitwear is best to wash with your hands in cold water.
4. And a trick on how to prevent loss of color: put a little salt in the water.
5. When it is wet, wring gently while wrapped in a towel to get rid of excess water.
6. Take sensitive knitwear, such as Merino, to the cleaners?
7. More great material, such as mohair, angora, and the like, can be administered for 20 minutes in the refrigerator (wet or dry - this is important) to freshen it.
8. Ironing is not recommended for knitwear. If, however, there are obvious wrinkles, use an iron slightly in the very low level.
9. The best storage for knitwear is to fold and stack them on a shelf, where there is at least a little ventilation and adequate protection against moth. Lavender and cedar will keep moths away.

History of Knitwear
The real turning point in the history of knitted fabrics came with Coco Chanel in 1916, when she created suits made with Jersey. Jean Pátou followed her with the line of sportswear for women. He is considered the inventor of knitted swimwear and tennis wings. Knitted jackets, which give priority to comfort, later became a popular fashion trend. The fifties were dominated by a slightly conservative ‘popcorn’ knitwear. The crazy sixties were manifested by Missoni’s zigzag pattern. This time is, however, also coincides with the penetration of Sonia Rykiel and her vibrantno striped and "preppy" sweaters. In the eighties the knitwear crossed from sportswear to high fashion. The most noticeable design being Romeo Gigli’s Haute-Bohemian Cocoon Coat and Ralph Lauren’s Floor-length Cashmere Turtleneck.

Movie Premiere: Notorious, Brooklyn, NY

On Thursday January 8, 2009, we attended the Brooklyn premiere of Notorious, the movie on the life and times of Christopher Wallace, aka Notorious B.I.G. (Biggie). This event was held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). It was an awesome event that was attended by Biggie’s family members, including his mother Voletta Wallace and his widow Faith Evans, and friends, Brooklyn city officials, other dignitaries, celebrities, Biggie’s fans, and other special guests and members of the public. Biggie was from Brooklyn, so a movie about his life has a special meaning to the people of Brooklyn, especially those who knew him.

Dignitaries in attendance include: Marty Markowitz (Brooklyn Borough President), who delivered a proclamation on the behalf of David Patterson, Governor of the State of New York; The Reverend Jessie Jackson; and Latisha James, Brooklyn Council Member.

Celebrities in attendance include: George Tillman, Jr., Director of Notorious; Jamal Woolard, who plays the role of Biggie; Derek Luke, who plays the role of Puffy; Antonique Smith, who plays the role of Faith Evans; Anthony Mackie, who plays the role of Tupac; and Dennis L.A. White, who plays the role of D-Roc.

All we will tell you about Notorious is that you should make sure you see it.

Urban: Eye for Fashion

On Friday December 5, 2008, A. G. Fashion Productions held their very first fashion show, dubbed Eye for Fashion, at Castillo Nightclub, Boston, MA. Five designers showcased their creativity in a very beautiful setting and a party atmosphere. It was a great show and a tremendous start for A. G. Fashion Productions.

Surprisingly, the highlight of the night came at the very end of the fashion show. Alicia Gilstrap, President of A. G. Fashion Productions, was on stage giving her vote of thanks to everyone who came out to support the event when her boyfriend of four years went down on his knees and popped the question (‘Will you marry me?’). Of course she said yes. It was awesome. Congratulations to Greg and Alicia.

Art: The Brian Kirhagis’ Exhibits

Brian Kirhagis is an artist of the times. He comes across very humble and would like to think he is a regular John Doe, who has a great sense of humor and is very in touch with world and current affairs. But he is no regular guy. He is a brilliant self-taught artist who consistently creates works of art that are powerful conversation pieces.

On Saturday November 29, 2008, we attended an art exhibition at Ceres Gallery, New York City, where three exhibits from Brian Kirhagis’ masterpieces were being showcased, alongside works by a few other artistes. We chatted with Brian Kirhagis about his work, and got a good sense of what inspires him, as well as how he came to be such a masterful artist.

In the early years, Brian Kirhagis’ art teacher told him he was not made for art and suggested that he pursued a career in another field. Being the obedient student that he was, Brian Kirhagis quit art and went in a different direction. Years later, he had a calling to return to art, and return he did. He sketched and painted and sketched and painted night and day and day and night, until he got in touch with the power that inspires and enables him to deliver masterpieces. Of course, he did not do it by himself. He got a little help from his ‘mentor’ Salvador Dalí, the brilliant Spanish Artist, whose life story and artistic technique is a motivating force and inspiration to him. Brian Kirhagis also has the word ‘patience’ tattooed in Arabic on his right hand (he is right-handed). Whenever he is tempted to quit ‘patience’ confronts him.

Brian Kirhagis’ art for the most part communicates life, and vice versa. He loves to party and have a good time, but he also has a healthy social conscience that keeps him connected with the issues and challenges that are ongoing in our world. His love for humanity and his concern about global issues are reflected in his works. Three of Brian Kirhagis’ works were featured at this exhibition. They are: Pray for Hip Hop (left), Generation Y (center), and Tied Up (right). These three works all have a few things in common. They are colorful, intricate, global, and powerful.

We asked Brian Kirhagis how did he know when a particular piece that he is working on is completed. His answer, ‘I get a certain feeling’.

Runway: Concordia College Fashion Show

On November 21, 2008, the African Latin Heritage Club at Concordia College, Bronxville, NY, held a fashion show dubbed ‘Welcome to the Jungle’. The creative works of six up-and-coming designers were showcased on the runway. After the six designers presented, the students gave the audience a little something extra, by showcasing pieces from their closets. The hosts for the evening were Brittany Johnson and Alaina Jackson, Concordia students. It was a beautiful event that was put together by a group of students who are busy getting prepared to step out into the real world. We enjoyed the presentation and would like to encourage the student body at Concordia, and in all learning institutions worldwide, to go hard for success.
